Kubota unveiled the Kubota All-Terrain Tractor earlier this year, a four-wheeled modular vehicle engineered to support farming in hilly and mountainous regions. Debuting at CES® 2025, the Kubota All-Terrain Tractor earned the “Best of Innovation” award for its groundbreaking design, advanced functionality, and visionary concept. By combining Kubota’s long-standing hydraulic and mechanical expertise with cutting-edge robotics, the platform tackles the challenges of farming on uneven terrain, unlocking the potential of land that has long been underutilised.
In Japan, where the Kubota All-Terrain Tractor was developed, hilly and mountainous farmland makes up about 38% of cultivated land and supports roughly 45% of farmers. These areas are difficult to mechanise, as standard tractors risk tipping or losing traction. With fewer and older farmers, maintaining production is increasingly difficult. Kubota aims to keep these regions productive while protecting their vital ecological roles, including erosion control and biodiversity.
The All-Terrain Tractor was created in direct response to these challenges. Its design is built on two core principles: modularity and integration. The modular structure allows users to adapt the machine for different tasks, such as expanding the wheel tread to handle ridged or sloping terrain, while the integrated platform enables external tools and modules to be attached and controlled remotely. This flexibility supports a wide range of operations, including pest control, spraying, and pruning.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Kubota All-Terrain Tractor can carry a payload of up to 240 kilograms while maintaining a level cargo deck through hydraulically adjustable legs that automatically balance on uneven ground. It can be operated by joystick or remote control, is easily transported by van or light truck, and features pivot turning for working in confined spaces. Kubota is also developing a battery-powered electric version for operations where emissions or noise restrictions apply.
The Kubota All-Terrain Tractor uses advanced hydraulic controls to maintain stability, movement, and load balance. On slopes or rough ground, its legs automatically adjust to keep the platform level. Drawing on Kubota’s proven expertise in construction and agricultural machinery, the design delivers strength and reliability in demanding conditions. The modular platform connects with external tools for tasks such as remote spraying, reducing operator exposure to heat or chemicals.
Built for difficult terrain, the platform prioritises safety and durability. Hydraulic legs prevent tipping, and its modular design supports added sensors or safety systems. Remote operation further protects operators working on steep or hazardous land.
The tractor increases productivity on uneven ground by bringing underused land into cultivation and reducing labour for repetitive or risky work. Its compact, agile design suits narrow or terraced fields, while its modular build allows new tools and functions to be added over time.
Development began in 2021, led by Kubota’s specialist team for mountainous agriculture. Following its CES® 2025 debut, the Kubota All-Terrain Tractor will be shown for the first time in Europe at Agritechnica, where Kubota will also begin field trials. The Kubota All-Terrain Tractor has been awarded the Red Dot Award in the Design Concept category at the prestigious Red Dot Design Award, one of the world’s three major design awards organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. Future plans include applications in vineyards, orchards, and terraced farms worldwide, with potential for electric, zero-emission models. This project supports Kubota’s goals to sustain food production, protect biodiversity, and advance global sustainability.
